(ECNS) - Ningbo and Zhengzhou became the latest cities in China to generate more than 1 trillion yuan by the end of 2018, bringing the total number of "1 trillion yuan club" cities in the country to 16.

A top port city, Ningbo in East China's Zhejiang Province said its GDP reached 1.07455 trillion yuan in 2018. The city's Zhoushan Port has handled the world’s largest volume of cargo, a position it has held for 10 years in a row. It ranked third in the world last year in terms of containers handled with 26.35 million TEUs.

Zhengzhou in Central China's Henan Province reported GDP of 1.01433 trillion yuan, growth of 8.1 percent over 2017. Now developing into a national central city, it is the country’s high-speed railway hub.

Other cities already in the club are Shanghai (the first to break through the threshold in 2006), Beijing (2008), Guangzhou (2010), Shenzhen, Tianjin, Suzhou and Chongqing (2011), Wuhan and Chengdu (2014), Hangzhou (2015), Nanjing and Qingdao (2016), Wuxi and Changsha (2017).

The Yangtze River Delta is now home to six mega cities – Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Wuxi and Ningbo. Shanghai and Beijing lead the nation, both with GDP surpassing 3 trillion yuan.

Foshan City in Guangdong Province is expected to break through the 1 trillion yuan threshold in the near future after its GDP rose 6.3 percent last year to reach 993.588 billion yuan.
